Mississippi
Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, Gabicce Mare (PU), Italy
The Mississippi structure is suitable to be used for purposes of public interest and its enormous potential in this sense has been shared, recognized and confirmed in the 2014 international competition of ideas for the redevelopment of the Gabicce Mare waterfront, which saw the Mississippi as an essential constant in the process of transformation and enhancement of the entire city waterfront, constituting for everyone the real "attractor" of the urban promenade by the sea. Believing in the strong representative connotation and potential of the building as a vehicle for the promotion of a stretch of the Marche maritime coast, the Municipality has planned the intervention of static, energetic and functional recovery of it, which was also necessary for the safety and protection of the public security of the users of the beach. Within the intervention, a closing element above the building was built, curvilinear in shape, functional to the integration of a photovoltaic system, which constitute one of the characterizing elements of the energy efficiency of the new nZEB structure (nearly Zero Energy Building).

The architectural design approach was to create a new volume, designed on the existing "colonnaded" grid, essential in its lines and figurative apparatus and represented through organic forms consistent with the semantic portrait of a building on the sea. The result is overall adequate to the place and to the extraordinary natural scenery with which the stilt structure is compared.
The photovoltaic modules are mostly hidden from the main views.
The photovoltaic system supplies the summer-winter air conditioning, DHW production, lighting, transport (freight elevator/elevator). It allowed to reach the nZEB level (Nearly Zero Energy Building).
The photovoltaic system is a shading structure. The modules (Viessmann Vitovolt 300 M4oo WG) are fixed through brackets bolted to the galvanized steel supporting roof system. The cables housed in visible PVC pipes.
The photovoltaic technology was introduced in the refurbishment project with the aim to abandon the fossil fuel sources (gas) and creating a new nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Building) energy self-sufficient.
